 In Blog, mosquitos

Mosquitoes are a huge problem everyone faces when trying to enjoy the outdoors, especially in the South. No one enjoys their itchy, annoying bites. Many commercial products can be used to get rid of mosquitoes, but there are also some natural ways that can get rid of them most people are unfamiliar with.

Throw Out Standing Water

Areas of standing water are the biggest threat when it comes to mosquito populations near your home. Mosquitoes thrive in any form of standing water including, but not limited to, gutters, ponds, fountains, and your pet’s water bowl. Mature mosquitoes lay their eggs in any standing water their find. So, if you have any water sources around your home that don’t quickly evaporate or regularly flow, you need to clean that out to prevent mosquito breeding.

DIY Traps

You may want to take a more DIY approach to naturally getting rid of mosquitoes. The easiest method is cutting a 2-liter plastic bottle in half and inverting the top inside of the bottom. You will boil a sugar water into a syrup and yeast. This method will work great if you are trying to get the mosquitoes out of your house. It can be used outside but will not capture every single mosquito.

Introduce Predators

The most natural way to get rid of mosquitos would be by introducing their natural predators around your home. The best options are fish. If you can keep a well-maintained pond in your yard, you can fill it with guppies, catfish, bluegills, goldfish, and koi. These fish love mosquito larvae and will drastically reduce the mosquito population near your home.

Invest in New Plants

Mosquitoes rely heavily on their sense of smell and tend to dislike scents that we find quite pleasant. This method doesn’t just naturally get rid of mosquitoes; it can also leave you with a beautiful garden. Line your house with plants such as peppermint, basil, marigold, catnip, and lavender to naturally make mosquitoes dislike your home and its smell.

Essential Oils

You can also use essential oils as a natural repellant around your home by spraying windows or doorways. You can also rub or spray the oils on your skin to prevent mosquitoes from biting you when outside. The CDC has approved the use of lemon eucalyptus oil as a proven method to get rid of mosquitoes. But you can also use oils like lavender, peppermint, citronella.

Find Your Method

Mosquitoes are everywhere, and nobody likes them. A lot of people don’t – or can’t – use chemicals or related products to fight back against these pests. Fortunately, you now have these natural methods in your arsenal to attack these unwelcome guests. Try out these methods and figure out which one works best for you.
